Putting things off is the biggest waste of life: it snatches away each day as it comes, and denies us the present by promising the future…What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately. Seneca, 4 BCE – 65CE
I’ve heard it hypothesized that we might orient our lives differently if we walked around with the number of days we have left to live inscribed on our foreheads–
That perhaps a constant reminder of the preciousness of our lives might spark us into living more deeply and meaningfully, more awake and alive.
When I envision this I am terrified.
I am electrified.
I zoom straight to my center, wondering: am I living a meaningful life?
Several studies suggest that humans make better decisions about their future when looking at a photo of themselves, digitally altered to show themselves 20 years into the future.
I wonder what would happen if I showed you a photo of your future self.
Would it yoke you into alignment with your deepest longings?
Ignite you to create/make/do the things you were born to create/make/do?
You may, like me, carry around in your heart a list of things (they take your breath away you want them so much) you will allow yourself to be, do, and have at some nebulous date in the future, only once all of your ducks are in a row.
(But, dear one, we both know the truth about our ducks.)
Answer honestly: What is on that list you’re carrying in your heart?
Answer honestly: What are you waiting for?
Permission? Confidence? To be discovered? Self-belief? Approval from everyone outside and inside of your head? To solve all of your psychological issues and be stress-free? To make sure it’s/you’re perfect? To make sure everyone else's needs are met? To have the time? To have no doubt?
To be unafraid?
You know this, but your ducks will never be in a row.
You know this, but your job is not to wait until you feel ready.
You know this, but your most important job is to wake up and answer the callings inside of you.
Sometimes the most powerful question is simply:
What one small thing do you need to do to get moving?
(By the way I said “get moving” NOT “be successful,” “get it right,” or “make it perfect." Got it?)
Do it now. Your future self is smiling.
